Prohibit outdoor wood burning fireplaces
October 5, 2007
A panel of experts assembled by Gov. Blagojevich recently suggested ways to reduce greenhouse gases in Illinois. One they didn't suggest was prohibiting the use of outside, wood burning fireplaces and fire pits. In most Illinois communities, homes are too close together to have them. They pollute the air with toxic emissions that enter the lungs of people in their yards and homes. Children, asthmatics, elderly people and even young and healthy people suffer needlessly.
Illinois needs a law that will prohibit the use of these outside fireplaces, and also prohibit the construction of new inside wood burning fireplaces. Phasing out inside wood burning fireplaces would be possible with the state reimbursing 50 percent of the cost (up to a maximum amount) for conversion to natural gas or electric.
