Ban wood smoke-Edina, Minnesota--USA

Ban wood smoke

To the editor:

What happened to property rights?

My husband and I live in Edina and enjoy our yard, deck and porch. We also enjoy having our windows open. Like everyone else, we pay property taxes for the ability to use and enjoy our property. But the past few years haven't been so enjoyable because wood smoke from outdoor fireplaces and pits in our immediate neighborhood is polluting our air.

The smell is nauseating, and it angers us to have to go inside and close up the house. We have recently learned how dangerous wood smoke is to breathe, alerting us that is not just a nuisance, but also a very real health hazard.

If people cannot smoke outside in Edina Parks, why do we have to breathe secondhand smoke on our own property? Edina grants free permits to anyone for recreational fires giving them "the right" to have a fire. It seems like Edina is permitting pollution. Shouldn't citizens also be able to get a "smoke free" permit for their property? We would like to see a ban on backyard wood fires so that Edina residents are not allowed to pollute for entertainment in this age of concern about pollution.
